Winn's Trivia
Q: Who planted the church that would come to be known as Winn's Baptist?
A: Separatist Baptist preachers John Waller, Samuel Harris, and James Read founded our church in 1776 with 50 members from Goochland Baptist. Each of these men of God was persecuted and imprisoned for preaching without a special license in the Anglican colony of Virginia. John Waller spent 114 days in four different jails and Harris was attacked or jailed in six different localities.
Q: By what other names was Winn's Baptist known throughout it's history?
A: Chickahominy Baptist, Chickahominy Meetinghouse, Winn’s Meetinghouse, and Bethlehem Church. Our first name is tied to the nearby river where many were baptized. The present church buildings stand on that same plot of ground.
Q: What historical artifact is hiding in plain sight in the foyer?
A: The chandelier outside the glass doors to the sanctuary once hung in our original building, which was built in the fall of 1776. The fixture was scrapped when the ceiling was lowered during a
renovation of the 1910 building. J. Early Wood spotted parts of a bronze chandelier partially buried in the construction debris and saved this priceless artifact from the dump. He recovered three of the six oil lanterns and held onto it for about 58 years before returning it to the church for the 240th anniversary celebration in 2016.
